I’d have to say the answer to this question in my opinion would have to be yes of course it is. It all boils down to the age old battle of girls verse boys, just like boys always argue that they are better drivers and girl can’t play football. Even though we have so called equal rights, I don’t believe that we are ever really classed as equals.
I won’t deny the fact that certain steps have been made by gaming companies to stamp out the sexism in the gaming world but in my opinion it’s a stereotypical and condescending approach that’s been used. The release of pink games consoles and so called games for girls’ don’t appeal to every girl gamer out there. I personally wouldn’t be seen dead with a pink Play Station or Nintendo DS cheap coach purses , I hate the color with a passion and I know I’m not the girl that feels this way. As for these so called games for girls, I don’t know about the rest of the female population out there but in my eyes they’re so patronizing.
I decided to do a search on the web typing in games for girls’ and to my horror the links related to the search came up with nothing but websites full of dress up games, applying makeup and cooking. Even in the gaming world, all girls seem to be good at is choosing a decent outfit, putting on makeup and knowing how to cook good meal. How demeaning is that girls? These games for girls’ would bore the hell out of my five year old daughter, never mind me. So, I now the question a lot of us girl would love to know the answer to. Are we not intelligent enough to play games with the big boys?
I’ve always been into what some might call boys games, I love the Need For Speeds because I’ve always had a thing for racing games and as far as they go, I think it’s the ultimate racing game. My all time favorite game would have to be Tony Hawk, yet again another so called boys game. My other half says I’m obsessed because I own them all and play them solid for days when I get the chance. He doesn’t mind admitting I’m better than him on it either, I’ve beat him at a few of his own games too. He wasn’t too happy when I beat him on Fight Night Round 3 for the Xbox 360 though. Anyway back to the point I was going to make, although some games like Tony Hawk have the option for you to play as a girl (Elissa Steamer) or the option of having a female create a skater, some of the missions in the game are still based on the gamer being male.
So, to put an end to it all, while some games companies are kind of trying to cater to a female audience, in my eyes the gaming world is sexist with games like Leisure Suit Larry. In my opinion, yes the gaming world is still a boy world but it is changing slowly. Just an idea to the gaming industry, one which I’ve already stated above, the choice to state whether you are male or female and have the game run to that effect.
